Tutoring Session

April 30, 2017

How does one describe perfume? That’s what I was thinking when my student didn’t know what it meant. The description I came up with: a smell on a person. Now I know that’s not a very good definition but Google gave me this fancy definition- “a fragrant liquid typically made from essential oils extracted from flowers and spices, used to impart a pleasant smell to one’s body or clothes.” There’s no way that a second grader who struggles with English will understand that description.

After I gave him my very bad definition of perfume, I showed him a picture and how people use it. I told him that we spray on perfume so that we aren’t stinky. He laughed a little bit, but I got my point across. He understood what perfume meant.
